#Don’t Deport Jose Robles-- No Deporten a Jose Robles
Yesterday, hundreds of us rallied at Riverton Park UMC and marched to the USCIS building in Tukwila. We cried out in hope for justice, that ICE would grant a stay of removal. Instead, they arrested him. He is detained at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma. I have spoken with him and he shares his thanks for all the support and says he is "okay."
Some say we failed. I believe we have not failed. Receiving Jose in sanctuary made it possible for the U-certification to be signed and for that application to be completed; it made it possible for the Robles family to have time together. This year also formed a new community--this sanctuary network--which is now better understanding the plight of immigrant neighbors and more deeply committed to speak up for justice. With Jose in detention, our task for this family shifts to advocate for the expedited U-Visa and to stay connected. How can you help?
Sign and share this petition. We are calling on the office of Enforcement and Removal Operations to send a request to USCIS for Jose’s U-Visa to be expedited. Jose is currently shielded from deportation because of the judicial stay he was granted, but he needs our help now so that he can go home.
Help us retire the legal defense debt (currently about $3300 needed, but there likely will be increased costs to extend the judicial stay and prevent deportation. Give to that online or send a check to GLC attn: Pr Joanne Engquist (legal fund).
Help us provide money for Jose's commissary account in detention and for family travel/grocery needs in this time. Maybe give up a meal, a coffee, or an ice cream and donate that money to Jose and family. When you are without that "thing" you would enjoy, spend some time thinking of Jose, Susana, Natalie, Brenda, Yuritzy, Alberto, and Olivia. We'd love to gather those donations and give to them on Sunday, July 28. Send a check or make offering in person at GLC, or use this site for online donation. Mark it (detention relief).
Attend as you are able the coming vigils outside the Tacoma Detention Center. Take a photo while there and share it to Gethsemane's page, so we can shine this light to the Robles family. From 2-3pm on Sunday July 21st, vigil is moved to outside the US District Court (1717 Pacific Ave) in Tacoma.
As ever, I say that what keeps us going is hope for justice, esperanza de justicia. Let that be our centering and our cry. I hope to see you Sunday for worship, surely we need this time together in prayer.
