Jose Leaves Sanctuary

On July 17th, Jose Robles left sanctuary to go with his legal team to meet with ICE (Immigrations and Customs Enforcement) to request a stay of removal.

Hundreds of people met in Tukwila to support of Jose. The day started at Riverton Park UMC (3118 S 140th, Seattle 98168).

Together, we walked from Riverton Park UMC (3118 S 140th, Seattle 98168) to USCIS (12500 International Blvd, Tukwila), gathering on the sidewalk as a multi-faith community urging ICE Acting Field Director Bryan Wilcox to grant the stay of removal and not detain Jose. Our hope was that Jose could go home to Lakewood with his family while the U-Visa is pending.

We cried out in hope for justice, that ICE would grant a stay of removal. Instead, they arrested him. He is detained at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma.

Some say we failed. I believe we have not failed. Receiving Jose in sanctuary made it possible for the U-certification to be signed and for that application to be completed; it made it possible for the Robles family to have time together. This year also formed a new community--this sanctuary network--which is now better understanding the plight of immigrant neighbors and more deeply committed to speak up for justice.
