Why Now

The current processing time for U-Visas (which is Jose's pending legal form of relief) is estimated by the government to be more than 50 (yes, fifty) months! Too long to remain in Sanctuary for sure. Still, there's been a lot of conversation – and some misinformation – about the timing of Jose's departure from Sanctuary. We want to clear up any confusion.

The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit granted Jose temporary protection from deportation so that he could complete his U Visa application. Knowing that he couldn't wait five years for that to process, facing ICE was something that Jose needed to do for his U Visa to be expedited. It was imperative that this meeting with ICE happened while the stay from deportation was active. It was also crucial that Jose's 9-year-old daughter be allowed to finish her school year without being separated from her father.

Now, we petition USCIS (United States Customs and Immigration) to expedite Jose's U-Visa application! You can help by signing the petition here.
